The Ouroboros: Life Eternal
The fetal position visually bridges the gap between endings and beginnings. Nestled within the circular embrace of the Ouroboros, the figure is held in a state of sacred protection.
A couple of years ago, I came across an amazing TV series: Life After Life, based on the captivating book by Kate Atkinson. The series follows protagonist Ursula Todd, who is born during a snowstorm in 1910 and dies, only to be continually reborn and live through alternate timelines of the turbulent 20th century.
What resonated so deeply about this storyline is the profound and complex weight of reincarnation. It presents a double-edged sword: the echoes of past lives can act as intuitive warnings to save her from danger, yet they also carry the heavy psychological residue of post-traumatic memory.
I’m also deeply fascinated by the phenomenon coined by Dr. Raymond Moody as near-death experiences (NDEs) - firsthand accounts gathered from millions of people worldwide. Research suggests that roughly 10% to 20% of people who come close to death report these profound episodes, spanning every age, background, and walk of life. In particular, accounts from those who recall past lives, in-between lives, and pre-birth memories offer a startling window into human consciousness. Organizations like IANDS (The International Association for Near-Death Studies) serve as an incredible resource for exploring this rigorous ongoing research.
Having personally met a few individuals who have lived through these extraordinary experiences, I find it deeply moving. When we consider that many diverse world cultures have long embraced the concept of reincarnation, alongside fascinating modern theoretical developments in the science and philosophy of consciousness, it's hard not to wonder if there’s something fundamental there. Does consciousness truly survive after death?
The Ouroboros
At the heart of these cyclical mysteries lies one of humanity's most ancient and enduring symbols: the Ouroboros - an ancient serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Representing eternity and the continuous cycle of destruction and creation, life turning back into itself, the Ouroboros is the ultimate visual metaphor for an endless life. It speaks directly to the idea that time is not a straight line marching toward an absolute end, but a closed loop where endings are simply new beginnings.

The Artwork
Consciousness is imagined here residing in the sacred "in-between" - that liminal space post-death and pre-birth, gently nourished by divine light. This ethereal nourishment is visualized through intricate rainbow veins that pulse across the composition like rivers of pure energy, connecting the soul's past iterations with its infinite future. It is a meditation on memory, continuity, and the luminous threads that bind our existence across time.
